What is Endometrial Cancer?

Dixie Carter died of endometrial cancer. What is endometrial cancer? The definition of endometrial cancer according to the National Cancer Institute is cancer of the uterus’ lining.

“Definition of endometrial cancer: Cancer that forms in the tissue lining the uterus (the small, hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman’s pelvis in which a fetus develops). Most endometrial cancers are adenocarcinomas (cancers that begin in cells that make and release mucus and other fluids).”


The total number of estimated new cases and deaths from endometrial (uterine corpus) cancer in the United States in 2009 were 42,160. Of those cases, roughly 17% of patients died, a total 7,780 deaths that year.

The New York Times said the following of Carter’s cancer:

“Dixie Carter, an accomplished actress who gave strong, opinionated Southern women a good name in the television series “Designing Women” in the 1980s and 1990s, and later enjoyed success as a cabaret singer, died on Saturday in a Houston hospital. She was 70 and lived in Beverly Hills, Calif. Her death was announced by her husband, the actor Hal Holbrook, who said that the cause was complications of endometrial cancer.”
