Dr Paul Connett World's Leading Expert on Fluoride Toxicity

Is Fluoride Harming Your Brain?

You might think of fluoridated water as a good thing—after all, this organic compound is added to our drinking supply for a reason, right? Unfortunately, however, the bigger picture isn’t quite so clear: Although water fluoridation has been standard practice in the U.S. since 1945, research suggests that using it on your teeth might also come with more than one dangerous consequence—especially where your brain is concerned.1
For example, rodent studies show that fluoride exposure can cause free radical damage to DNA molecules and cells in areas of the brain that are essential for cognition, as well as structural brain changes and phospholipid decreases that correlate to impaired learning ability.2-4 Even more research has shown that fluoride elevates the activity of acetylcholinesterase—an enzyme that breaks down the critical memory-related neurotransmitter acetylcholine—while also altering levels of a number of other neurotransmitters (including dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin) that play a role in your brain’s recall ability.5-6
Scientists speculate that the reason for fluoride’s negative effects on the brain traces back to its role in oxidative damage. As it turns out, even low levels of exposure over a period of 10 weeks can increase free radical loads and sap stores of the crucial antioxidant glutathione, along with other key antioxidant enzymes, including catalase and superoxide dismutase.7-8
What’s worse, increased fluoride intake may have a direct effect on IQ scores—especially among children. Research indicates that elevated urinary fluoride levels are associated with poorer verbal and performance evaluations in this age group, indicating that increased intake of this compound may have a startlingly negative impact on childhood intelligence development.9-10 In fact, in areas with higher levels of fluoride in drinking water, there is as much as five times the risk of developing a low IQ than in low-fluoride areas.11 But even at these lower levels, research has revealed that fluoride in water can have a significant impact on intelligence quotients.12
So what can you do to keep fluoride out of your body? Well, keeping it out of your water with the help of a special “fluoride certified” water system is a good place to start—but luckily, several natural compounds have been shown to counteract fluoride’s effects, too. For example, animal research shows that melatonin can reduce markers of oxidative stress while enhancing the brain’s antioxidant enzyme activity and glutathione levels.13-14
Supplementation with iodine has also been shown to support brain health—low levels of this mineral are linked to low IQ risk in children—while facilitating urinary fluoride excretion.15-17 Meanwhile, the B vitamins riboflavin and niacin  work in combination to promote maximum iodine absorption and minimum fluoride retention.18
Unfortunately, fluoride detoxification can also trigger a temporary reaction in the form of brain fog and sluggish thinking. To re-energize your brain and promote mental clarity, you can turn to a combination of phophatidylserine (which has been shown to improve cognitive function and mental performance under stress) and glycerophosphocholine (which boosts brain levels of memory- and learning-related neurotransmitters)—both of which are included with acetyl-L-carnitine.19-22
Acetyl-L-carnitine along with acetyl-L-carnitine arginate, Gotu kola, Ginkgo biloba, and uridine, all of which can aid in counteracting fluoride’s pro-oxidant effects by supporting the growth and rejuvenation of your brain’s neurites and dendrites.23-24 (references available)

The #1 Nutrient For Thyroid Health  Can iodine help?

The thyroid gland stores iodine until it's needed to make necessary hormones that affect: Weight loss, Energy, Cholesterol control, Mood & mental performance.

That's why nutrients such as Iodine, L-Tyrosine, Kelp and other iodine-rich seaweeds rejuvenate and balance thyroid function. These help to protect the thyroid and supports its detoxification process.

While these low dose and natural iodine sources do not contain the pharmaceutical levels you would need in the event of a nuclear emergency, natural health professionals say they can go a long way to nourishing and fortifying your thyroid.

Top 10 Drugs: Violence and more Fluoride

This of course to me is no surprise.  I have been writing about this issue since the Columbine shootings where some of these drugs were involved. Chantix has been covered at Natural Health News since 2008.  SSRIs/SNRIs are mentioned in 30+ posts. We're providing this information so you can be aware.
10. Desvenlafaxine (Pristiq) An antidepressant which affects both serotonin and noradrenaline, this drug is 7.9 times more likely to be associated with violence than other drugs.
9. Venlafaxine (Effexor) A drug related to Pristiq in the same class of antidepressants, both are also used to treat anxiety disorders. Effexor is 8.3 times more likely than other drugs to be related to violent behavior.

8. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) An antidepressant that affects serotonin (SSRI), Luvox is 8.4 times more likely than other medications to be linked with violence
7. Triazolam (Halcion) A benzodiazepine which can be addictive, used to treat insomnia. Halcion is 8.7 times more likely to be linked with violence than other drugs, according to the study.
6) Atomoxetine (Strattera) Used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Strattera affects the neurotransmitter noradrenaline and is 9 times more likely to be linked with violence compared to the average medication.
5) Mefoquine (Lariam) A treatment for malaria, Lariam has long been linked with reports of bizarre behavior. It is 9.5 times more likely to be linked with violence than other drugs.
4) Amphetamines: (Various) Amphetamines are used to treat ADHD and affect the brain's dopamine and noradrenaline systems. They are 9.6 times more likely to be linked to violence, compared to other drugs.
3) Paroxetine (Paxil) An SSRI antidepressant, Paxil is also linked with more severe withdrawal symptoms and a greater risk of birth defects compared to other medications in that class. It is 10.3 times more likely to be linked with violence compared to other drugs.

2) Fluoxetine (Prozac) The first well-known SSRI antidepressant, Prozac is 10.9 times more likely to be linked with violence in comparison with other medications.
1) Varenicline (Chantix) The anti-smoking medication Chantix affects the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, which helps reduce craving for smoking. Unfortunately, it's 18 times more likely to be linked with violence compared to other drugs — by comparison, that number for Xyban is 3.9 and just 1.9 for nicotine replacement. Because Chantix is slightly superior in terms of quit rates in comparison to other drugs, it shouldn't necessarily be ruled out as an option for those trying to quit, however.
Related information about fluoride is found here as well, and now you know mainstream media is finally suggesting you have been getting too much.  Here are the 8 top true "conspiracy theories".  It is not just that fluoride harms your teeth, but it is wise to look at all the fluoride dental products you've been using in addition to your fluoridated water, drugs, foods, agriculture, home and garden products...
#1 High Levels Of Fluoride In Our Drinking Water Is Bad - Amazingly, the U.S. federal government has now come out and is lowering the "recommended amount" of fluoride in our drinking water for the first time in 50 years.  Of course it would be great if they just banned fluoride in our drinking water altogether, but for the government to even admit that high levels of fluoride could be a problem is a huge step.  In a recent article on CNN, it was reported that the federal government is now saying that high levels of fluoride in the water has now officially been linked with fluorosis....  Read the complete list here -
Good coverage of the Worst Pills of 2010 include more of the same as in the aforementioned articles.  Many of the drugs on this list have been reported here at Natural Health News in our effort to keep you educated and aware.
Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, SSRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) antidepressants like Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft and Lexapro probably did more to inflate drug industry profits than Viagra. But many say the drugs have also inflated police blotters. In addition to 4,200 published reports of SSRI-related violence, including the Columbine, Red Lake and NIU shootings, SSRIs can cause serotonin syndrome and gastrointestinal bleeding when taken with certain drugs. Paxil is linked to birth defects.
Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq, SNRIs
Selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are like their SSRIs chemical cousins except their norepinephrine effects can modulate pain, which has ushered in your-depression-is-really-pain, your-pain-is-really-depression and other crossover marketing. SNRI's are also harder to quit than SSRIs. 739,000 web sites address "Effexor" and "withdrawal."

Seroquel, Zyprexa, Geodon, atypical antipsychotics
The antipsychotic Seroquel tops 71 drugs on the FDA's January 2010 adverse event report and is linked to unexplained troop deaths and many research scandals. But it's the fifth biggest-selling drug in the world. Atypical antipsychotics cause weight gain and diabetes, the tardive dyskinesia they are marketed to prevent and death in the demented elderly. Yet FDA approved Zyprexa and Seroquel for children last year and the new atypical antipsychotic, Latuda this year. Maybe the FDA is bipolar.

Chantix
After 397 FDA cases of possible psychosis, 227 domestic reports of suicidal behaviors and 28 actual suicides, the government banned pilots, air-traffic controllers and interstate truck and bus drivers from taking the antismoking drug Chantix in 2008. Its neuropsychiatric effects were immortalized when New Bohemians musician Carter Albrecht was shot to death in 2007 in Texas by a neighbor after acting aggressively on the Chantix.

Getting Too Much Fluoride? Better Check Your Strawberries

UPDATE:16 January

DOW and their paid-for Senator move to stop SF use
The New York Times just reported that a "political battle" is brewing on EPA's decision to phase out the use of sulfuryl fluoride as a food fumigant in the US. According to the Times, Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla.) wants to initiate a congressional inquiry into how EPA made its decision since sulfuryl fluoride only contributes a "negligible" contribution to aggregate fluoride exposure. Based on this article, FAN was asked the following question by a visitor: "Can someone explain why the removal of a pesticide that constitutes a 'tiny fraction' of total fluoride exposure is worth the added expense of finding a new and equally effective pesticide?"

Since we expect that Dow AgroSciences and Senator Inhofe may attempt to use this argument in the coming days/months, Michael Connett (who co-authored many of FAN's submissions to EPA on sulfuryl fluoride and is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Temple Law Review) penned the following response:

First, as a legal matter, the issue is very clear. The FFDCA, as modified by the Food Quality Protection Act, forbids EPA from granting pesticide tolerances for chemicals to which the population is already over-exposed. Thus, since abundant data shows that we have a fluoride over-exposure problem in the US, the EPA had essentially two, mutually-exclusive options: follow the law, or allow sulfuryl fluoride. Senator Inhofe's real beef, therefore, is not with the science, but with the law.

Second, and more to the point of your question: why should we be concerned when -- as a practical matter -- sulfuryl fluoride provides only a relatively small contribution to our AGGREGATE fluoride exposure? The answer is analogous to the idea that you should know more than the average depth of a river before attempting to ford across it. More specifically, the reason our annual exposure to sulfuryl fluoride is minimal is because it is a fumigant and most food is not fumigated (e.g. food processing facilities typically fumigate about 2 to 3 times a year). However, the food that IS fumigated contains extremely high levels of fluoride (e.g. 125 ppm on wheat flour). Thus, while you won't receive a large annual exposure to fluoride from sulfuryl fluoride, you can receive massive wallops on any given day. Fumigating the food supply with sulfuryl fluoride, therefore, creates a situation akin to Russian roulette, where some (unknowing) consumers will (unknowingly) buy flour, grain, or processed foods with extremely high levels of fluoride -- high enough, in fact, to exceed the dose (>0.1 mg/kg) that causes symptoms of acute fluoride toxicity (e.g. gastrointestinal pain and vomiting).

Take, for example, EPA's initial tolerance for dried eggs. Amazingly, EPA allowed Dow to add 900 ppm of fluoride to dried eggs, which is virtually the same level of fluoride as is added to toothpaste (1000 ppm). What's the problem with this? Well, next time you pick up a tube of fluoride toothpaste, read the FDA-mandated warning on the back which reads: "if you swallow more than used for brushing, contact a poison control center immediately." Now, it's one thing to brush your teeth with a poison -- since toothpaste is designed to be spit out. It's a whole different thing, however, to turn dried eggs into a poison, as -- unlike toothpaste -- dried eggs are designed to be eaten. And, in case you're wondering, dried eggs constitute one-third of the eggs consumed in the US.

Thankfully, the EPA eventually rescinded its dried-egg tolerances (after we brought the absurdity to light). However, EPA's standards still allow 125 ppm of fluoride in wheat flour and similarly high levels on hundreds of other foods. The concern with acute toxicity remains, and you can read more about it on pages 96 to 104 at http://www.fluoridealert.org/sf/nov-2006.pdf.

In addition to the acute toxicity problem, high spikes in temporary fluoride exposure have been shown -- in animal studies -- to cause dental fluorosis. Creating a food system which gives kids random wallops of fluoride ingestion could worsen the severity of dental fluorosis in the country.

Finally, alternatives exist to sulfuryl-fluoride fumigation, and they are being widely used in Europe (despite significant lobbying efforts by Dow AgroSciences). Even in countries where sulfuryl fluoride has been approved (Canada, UK, Switzerland) food processors are required to REMOVE all food from the food processing facility PRIOR to fumigating with sulfuryl fluoride -- thereby preventing the contamination of food.

Paul Connett, Director
Fluoride Action Network
http://fluoridealert.org/
-----------------------------------------
In the recent past couple of years an effort to stop the use of sulfuryl fluoride from being applied to strawberries has been waged.  What few probably know is that the effort to stop its use all together goes back to the early days of the 21st Century.

But this week, "FAN (Fluoride Action Network), had a stunning victory. This was a wonderful answer to those who believe that the little guy never wins.  In a 9:30am conference call with Jonathan Fleuchaus, the general counsel of EPA's Pesticides program and 7 other EPA pesticide staff members, we were told that EPA was granting ALL our objections to the use of sulfuryl fluoride as a food fumigant. Mr. Fleuchas told us that it was was the first time in the history of EPA that such objections were granted. What this means is that EPA is going to end all uses of sulfuryl fluoride on food."
Pesticides: Despite repeated warnings that humans, particularly children, are currently receiving too much fluoride from their diets, fluoride pesticides continue to be added to the food supply under extremely lax regulations from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Currently, the main fluoride pesticide used in the US is cryolite (sodium aluminum fluoride). The EPA currently allows up to 7 ppm of fluoride on over 30 fruits and vegetables treated with cryolite. This 7 ppm fluoride tolerance applies to: apricots, beets, blackberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, citrus fruits, collards, cranberries, cucumbers, eggplants, grapes, kale, lettuce, melons, nectarines, peaches, peppers, plums, pumpkins, radishes, raspberries, squash, strawberries, tomatoes and turnip.
A 2 ppm standard has also been established for potatoes, which are second to grapes for total cryolite usage. The EPA's standard of 7 ppm for fluoride residues is over 5 times greater than the standard set by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1933. In 1933, the USDA established the maximum level for fluoride residues on fruits and vegetables at 1.2 ppm, which was the same standard the USDA established for arsenic. While arsenic pesticides have since been phased out of use in the US , fluoride pesticides remain. In fact, the current tolerance levels for fluoride pesticides could become even higher--if the US EPA, under intense pressure from Dow Chemical, approves sulfuryl fluoride as a replacement fumigant for methyl bromide.
If EPA approves sulfuryl fluoride (an indoor fumigant that has never before been used on food) as the replacement for methyl bromide, there will be a substantial increase in the fluoride contamination of the food supply.
In a recent petition (February 15, 2002) to the EPA, Dow Chemical asked for extremely high fluoride tolerances on a wide number of common foods, including, 98 ppm for wheat germ, 40 ppm for wheat bran, 31 ppm for rice bran, 30 ppm for a variety of nuts, 28 ppm for corn meal, 26 ppm for corn flour, 25 ppm for millet grain, 25 ppm for wild rice grain, 25 ppm for sorghum grain, 25 ppm for wheat grain, and 17 ppm for oat grain!

Another Reason Fast Food Makes You Sick & Fat

Fluoride in fast food wrappers - Exploring Indirect Sources of Human Exposure to Perfluoroalkyl Carboxylates (PFCAs): Evaluating Uptake, Elimination and Biotransformation of Polyfluoroalkyl Phosphate Esters (PAPs) in the Rat"

FAST-FOOD WRAPPERS ARE A SOURCE OF TOXIC CHEMICALS"
It now appears that dangerous chemicals line the wrappers of fast food.
PAPs (polyfluoroalkyl phosphate esters) are used as non-stick agents on the inside of fast-food wrappers, which are now found to make their way into the food contents. Once consumed they are metabolized into PFCAs (perfluorinated carboxylic acids) - dangerous chemicals which can cause cancer.
Scientists at Toronto Uni, Ontario, say the wrappers could be a major, and totally unexpected, source of these chemicals. They've found high concentrations of PFCAs in a number of popular fast foods.
The chemicals are used to make paper resistant to grease and include some burger and fries wrappers.
Until now scientists had assumed that the high concentrations of PFCAs found in most people's bodies came from such things as the fluoride used in non-stick cookware and stain-repellent furnishings etc.

ARAVA and Liver Failure

Another fluoride-based drug cause serious problems.

Often, in mainstream medicine, the issue of wheat allergy is overlooked in RA (rheumatoid arthritis).

A general approach to RA is to use niacinamide, 250 mg, one tablet taken 4 times a day.

FDA Adds Liver Failure Warning to RA Drug

By Cole Petrochko, Staff Writer, MedPage Today

WASHINGTON -- The FDA has expanded the black box warning to the label of the rheumatoid arthritis drug leflunomide (Arava) to include possible fatal liver damage.
The agency received 49 adverse event reports -- including instances of jaundice, coagulopathy, encephalopathy, and 14 fatalities -- about the drug from August 2002 to May 2009. Of the patients reporting adverse events, 36 were hospitalized.
Time before severe reactions occurred ranged from nine days to six years, with most experiencing an adverse event within the first six to 12 months of treatment.
The greatest risk occurred in patients taking other drugs that may cause liver damage while taking leflunomide and in patients with preexisting liver disease. These warnings have been included on the new label.
The label notes that liver enzymes should be monitored monthly for three months after the start of treatment. If ALT rises above two-times normal, treatment should be stopped and a cholestyramine washout should be administered to accelerate the removal of the drug from the body.
Patients with increased ALT should undergo liver function tests weekly until levels return to normal.
Patients who develop itching, yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, loss of appetite, or light-colored stool while taking leflunomide should contact a healthcare professional, the statement said.
The drug previously carried a boxed warning that the drug was contraindicated in pregnant women and women of childbearing age who do not use reliable contraception.

Watch Out for Fluoride Damage in New Colgate Products

Fluoride is a known poison.
It has been scientifically proven that amounts of fluoride under 1 PPM is toxic to humans, and poisonous especially to children and pets.

Can you wonder what damage Colgate can do with their new "Pro Clinical line: Renewal" product?

One fluoride research colleague tells me that if FDA and Health Canada were actually doing their job, these products would never get to market.
"Colgate is stepping up their game.

Known as a go-to brand for your average daily toothpaste, Colgate has now partnered with research scientists and dentists to launch a professional range of products that are available at the drugstore.

The new Pro Clinical line includes whitening, cleaning and renewal toothpastes that take their technology from a trip to the dentist's chair for a cleaning.

The Daily Whitening toothpaste is formulated with ProLuminex silica crystals that remove and prevent stains with exfoliation-like action. Meanwhile, Daily Cleaning contains Prophy-Silica buffers that are similar to what the dentist uses when your teeth are polished during a cleaning, while Daily Renewal is fortified with 1500 ppm of fluoride -- the highest amount allowed without a prescription -- to strengthen and solidify enamel, as well as protect teeth from corrosive food acids that cause decay.

Colgate claims that study participants saw results in as little as three weeks, with full results shown after six weeks of regular twice-daily brushing. We've used it for a week, and are already loving the results."

Fluoride Not a Cavity Preventive

Fluoride in the most basic form, natural or otherwise, is a poison, known for decades not to be effective in reducing cavities.
Fluoridation Does Not Reduce Tooth Decay

Statistics from a study conducted by the New Zealand Ministry of Health suggest that there are no advantages derived from fluoridation. These statistics actually match similar arguments set forth by the American Dental Association.

The latter organization conducted a large study on some 39000 American children and found that they did not derive any advantages from the use of fluoride.

The process of fluoridation is the practice of adding fluoride minerals to a water source so that people can get exposed to the mineral through drinking water. Some bodies of water already have fluoride in them and do not need fluoride added.

The fluoride is allegedly added so that it can help in the prevention of cavity development. The practice of adding fluoride to water is suppose to allow many people, regardless of income, to receive healthy doses of fluoride. Yet, recent studies are revealing that the fluoridation practices do little in terms of cavity prevention, if anything at all.

The study conducted in New Zealand by the Ministry of Health reveals that children living in areas with no fluoride have one percent fewer cavities than those children that reside in regions where fluoridation is offered. Nevertheless, the Health Ministry still asserts that some thirty percent of children will gain some advantages from regular fluoridation.

While the assertion may seem somewhat paradoxical, the statistics offered by the organization mix low and high socioeconomic towns and cities to supply a figure to represent the nation. This mixing of statistics results in a rather poor representation of what is really going on.

Some researchers argue that the statistics would reveal that both groups of tested children would benefit from fluoridation if fluoridation had advantages.

In truth, the statistics are actually revealing that children are simply not benefiting from the use of fluoridation. The bottom line is that the Ministry of Health is trying to make the use of fluoridation sound more promising.

Some researchers suggest that the Ministry is acting against at least fifty years of studies that indicate fluoridation does not provide an adequate defense against cavities.http://worldental.org/dental-news/health-ministry-finds-that-fluoridation-does-not-reduce-tooth-decay/1300/

Where's the rest of the story?

An interesting study reports fluoride based serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs kill cancer cells in the lab.

This article includes no reference to how long the study lasted, nor did it say how long the drug continued to kill cells, or what dose was used.

What one has to wonder is which filing cabinet drawer or round file this will got to once replication occurs, and a review of the horrendous side effects associated with fluoride are.

Additionally there is no mention that fluoride based drugs suppress your thyroid and nothing is said about the known damaging side effects, including homicide and suicide.

Maybe the latter two refer to a new way to kill cancer...

Now what happens to this class of drugs and the Black Box warnings?
"This, combined with many years of experience in treating patients with these drugs, means that doctors can be confident that the treatment will not cause significant effects on normal tissues and is safe for virtually all patients."
New study claims Prozac can help in the battle with cancer
Prozac and other well established antidepressants could be the latest weapon in the fight against cancer, claim scientists who found they stop tumours from growing.

By Richard Alleyne, Science Correspondent, 23 Apr 2010

Researchers in Britain have found that the commonly used drug suppresses tumour growth by as much as 90 per cent and could be used to boost the effectiveness of other cancer fighting treatments.

And because it has already been tested, it should mean that it could be available for use far more quickly than new drugs that have to go through numerous safety trials.

The team at the University of Birmingham found that the active ingredients from Prozac, medical name fluoxetine, could bring on apoptosis (a kind of natural death) in cancer cells cultivated in the laboratory.

Further trials on actual live tissue – blood with leukaemia – showed that it dramatically reduced tumour growth by up to 90 per cent.

Now they believe clinical trials on humans will see the results replicated in real cancer patients.

"We were thrilled to see these results," said Professor Barnes. "It shows a real opportunity to maintain the pressure on tumours in between chemotherapy cycles."

The findings, published in the journal Leukaemia Research, showed that both Prozac (Fluoxetine) and another antidepressant Chlomipramine were effective against cancer cells in leukaemia and lymphoma patients.

Professor Nick Barnes, one of the study leaders, believes that by using the drug along with traditional chemotherapy survival rates could be dramatically improved.

One of the big problems with chemotherapy is that it is so powerful that treatments have to be done in cycles as the drugs are so damaging to healthy cells as well as cancer cells.

That means cancer cells have the ability to regroup and spread in-between treatments. Prozac could be used to "keep a lid" on cancer growth between cycles.

Ken Campbell, a spokesman for the charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: "This research holds the promise of safe, less toxic treatments for the most common group of blood cancers.

"This, combined with many years of experience in treating patients with these drugs, means that doctors can be confident that the treatment will not cause significant effects on normal tissues and is safe for virtually all patients." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/7624419/Prozac-can-help-in-the-battle-with-cancer.html

Because Charlie Crist, Florida's governor, proclaimed May as Electromagnetic Sensitivity Month I felt it important to include a reference to the following article. Along with a concern about rising rates of thyroid cancer I think it is worthwhile to consider the implications of fluoride in the water supply, fluoride in many drugs and in pink salt or found in other places along with increasing cell phone use and increasing rates of exposure to ionizing radiation or depleted uranium as vectors for this serious health concern.
Thyroid Cancer Increasing, Scientists Don't Know Why

Critical Humourism

I like humor. I like it so much that I have a web page devoted to corn. It even has its very own web jester (Yes, in deedy, our own Mr. CAB keeps us laughing with his funny jokes and oft times silly humor.)

Now I found something I think is humourous, although it may wax cynical in the minds of some.

However you find your own take on this whimsy, please understand that's all it is meant to be.

Searching: An interesting dichotomy

It’s interesting on several levels to me because Joe Mercola fancies himself as the health expert of the internet. Then, I remember when he first started out and was found looking over my main web site just about every day.

Now, I too am considered a formidable health expert by a high number of people around the world. I speak with many of them daily; many more contact me via my blogs, my newsletters and websites, phone, snail mail, and email.

Of course this keeps me pretty occupied, but I do make time for the necessary research I do for clients and for my publications.

Yes, I do sell products, and all profits go directly to our 501c3 tax-exempt, non-profit organization that keeps us on line, no matter which product or service you choose.

We haven’t sold out to what I like to refer to as ‘Wildwood Hucksterism’, especially when it comes to what’s really in that pink Himalayan salt.

Just remember that the pink salt is high in sodium, and fluoride, so it is easy to understand why our choice, Celtic salt, remains our choice, with 17% less sodium, no traces of fluoride, and its proven health benefits.

So maybe now you’ll switch, and bypass the fluoride too. We’ll be pleased to take your order, and we’ll even keep the light on…

Experts differ on health risk of volcanic ash

You are not hearing in the mainstream media the health risk concerns of the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland.  Here is information you should know -
As usual, the UN and North American news do not mention the dangers of fluoride in volcanic ash, as it relates to yesterday's eruption.

The Russian paper Pravda was the only one I could find.

Evaluating a fluorosis hazard after a volcanic eruption.

Abstract

The August, 1991 eruption of Mt. Hudson (Chile) deposited ash across southern Argentina and contributed to the deaths of thousands of grazing sheep. Early ash analysis revealed high levels of fluoride, a potential ash constituent toxic to humans and animals. In order to evaluate fluorosis as the cause of sheep deaths and to examine the possibility that similar ash and airborne toxins could also have an effect on the human population, we conducted an investigation that included health provider interviews, hospital record review, physical examination of sheep, determination of sheep urine fluoride levels, and complete constituent analysis of ash samples collected at proscribed distances from the volcano. Ash deposited farthest from the volcano had highest fluoride levels; all fluoride measurements were normal after rainfall. There were no signs or symptoms of fluorosis observed in sheep or humans. Sheep deaths resulted from physical, rather than chemical properties of the ash. PMID: 7944572 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

When a little hype can cause big health problems

This morning a visitor from Florida was perusing Natural Health News for posts about the pink salt fad.  Their comment is below, and I have posted it so you can see how their understanding of fluorine and fluoride is grossly inaccurate.

I do not know where their information originated but it is quite well known that fluoride additives are not  pumped into water as "gas flourine".  Water fluoridation currently, and, for some time, has been in the form of adding hydrofluosilicic acid.

Fluoride in any form is not "inert", and NO, I would not do very good as a corporate lobbyist because I don't do a good job of altering facts to fit a sales scheme.
"Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Himalayan Salt FAD May Be a Health Risk": Again, into US water is pumped the gas flourine. It cannot be removed with filters of any sort. Flouride, such as in salts, is an inert ingredient which is an entirely different kettle of tea. Havve you thought of applying for a job as a corporate lobbyist?"
Commenting below on the above quote is an internationally respected fluoride researcher -
Re: fluoride:
"Again, into US water is pumped the gas flourine."
Nonsense. First of all, it's FLUORINE and FLUORIDE, not flourine and flouride....
FLUORINE is a gas, and is NOT used in water fluoridation.
The two agents used most commonly for water fluoridation in the US are hydrofluorosilicic acid and sodium fluoride.
"Flouride, such as in salts, is an inert ingredient which is an entirely different kettle of tea."
FLUORIDE, even in the form of calcium fluoride, the compound called "natural fluoride" by those ignorant on this issue, is NOT inert.

This web site -  http://poisonfluoride.com/pfpc/fluoride_Aromalife.htm - is not translated into English.  If you are unable to read German you may use a free translation service of your choice.  However, the chemical analysis is clear and descriptive enough to show that this " Himalayan pink crystal salt" is extremely high in several very toxic substances, contains a rather harmful level of sodium (14 percentage points higher than Celtic salt), and is replete with fluoride at 231 mg.  As with fluoride, many of the toxic substances in the "pink salt" are not necessary, and can be very harmful, for and to human and animal health.

Further, data based on science, rather than marketing or sales schemes, can be found here and here.

I always welcome comments, however they should be realistic and free from links to advertising.  At NHN we reserve the right to use, not use/and or post, submitted comments accordingly.

Perhaps this is one of the most ill informed comments received at Natural Health News since Mike Adams directed his ad hominem attacks against me personally, our organization, and Natural Health News. Adams made a rash of defamatory comments about me, including one alluding to his unfounded claim that NHN is PhRMA funded.

Interestingly, Natural Health News is fully transparent;  Adams, his unidentified Taiwanese (and or other) backers, as well as their hundreds of webseed (seedweb) vacuous web sites based in Canada, are not.

Perhaps Adams is the one backed by PhRMA, and he is just projecting fear and guilt.

Fluoride: Learn how it harms your kidneys

Fluoride & the Kidneys: Kidney disease markedly increases an individual's susceptibility to fluoride toxicity.

The kidneys are responsible for ridding the body of ingested fluoride, and thereby preventing the buildup of toxic levels of fluoride in the body.

In healthy adults, the kidneys are able to excrete approximately 50% of an ingested dose of fluoride.

However, in adults with kidney disease the kidneys may excrete as little as 10 to 20% of an ingested dose - thus increasing the body burden of fluoride and increasing an individual's susceptibility to fluoride poisoning (e.g. renal osteodystrophy).

The bone changes commonly found among patients with advanced kidney disease closely resemble the bone changes found among individuals with the osteomalacic-type of skeletal fluorosis. This raises the possibility that some individuals with kidney disease are suffering from undiagnosed skeletal fluorosis.

As noted by Dr. Edward Groth, a veteran Senior Scientist at Consumers Union:
"It seems probable that some people with severe or long-term renal disease, which might not be advanced enough to require hemodialysis, can still experience reduced fluoride excretion to an extent that can lead to fluorosis, or aggravate skeletal complications associated with kidney disease... It has been estimated that one in every 25 Americans may have some form of kidney disease; it would seem imperative that the magnitude of risk to such a large sub-segment of the population be determined through extensive and careful study. To date, however, no studies of this sort have been carried out, and none is planned" (Groth 1973; Doctoral Thesis; Stanford University).

Because the kidney accumulates more fluoride than all other soft tissues (with the exception of the pineal gland), there is concern that excess fluoride exposure may contribute to kidney disease - thus initiating a "vicious cycle" where the damaged kidneys increase the accumulation of fluoride, causing in turn further damage to the kidney, bone, and other organs.

The possibility that fluoride exposure can cause direct damage to kidney tissue is supported by a long line of animal and human studies.

In studies on fluoride-exposed animals, kidney damage has been reported at levels as low as 1 ppm if the animals consume the water for long periods of time.

In humans, elevated rates of kidney damage are frequently encountered among populations with skeletal fluorosis. In addition, several case reports suggest that some individuals with kidney disease can experience significant recovery in their clinical signs and symptoms following the provision of fluoride-free water.

Bone Drugs Cancer Protective?

UPDATE: 2/3/10  Fosamax and breast cancer  A Caution to women to not take headlines so seriously

Original Post 12/10/09
It seems very strange to me that any woman would want to take a potentially cancer creating drug under the guise that it might help prevent breast cancer.  Most of these drugs also are fluoride based; fluoride is a known carcinogen as well as destructive to bone.

Here are a few of the numerous related NHN articles:

Bone drugs may help prevent breast cancer

New results from a landmark women's health study raise the exciting possibility that bone-building drugs such as Fosamax and Actonel may help prevent breast cancer.

Women who already were using these medicines when the study began were about one-third less likely to develop invasive breast cancer over the next seven years than women not taking such pills, doctors reported Thursday.

The study is not enough to prove that these drugs, called bisphosphonates, prevent cancer. Read Complete Article

Supermarket fridges polluting with fluoride containing hydrocarbons

Supermarket fridges as polluting as their plastic bags, study claims

The switch to refrigerants that do not damage the ozone layer brought in a generation of chemicals with a greenhouse effect thousands of times stronger than CO2

"The environmental impact of supermarket refrigeration is a big issue but little understood … it is a hell of a lot bigger than free plastic bags."
The EIA is concerned about the widespread use of damaging HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) gases as coolants. Supermarkets are the biggest industrial emitters of HFCs, which were hurriedly introduced in the 1990s as a safer alternative to ozone-depleting chemicals such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).

HFCs do not damage the ozone layer but their global warming potential is significant. One tonne of the widely used gas called R404a has a warming effect equal to 3,900 tonnes of CO2 over a 100-year period. The level of leakage of the chemicals is equivalent to 1bn car journeys to the average local supermarket. The gases escape in normal use and maintenance.

Fluoridation a top cause of infant death

Fluoridation causes more premature births, one of the top causes of infant death in the USA. It poses the greatest risk to poor non-white mothers and babies. This is the finding State University of New York researchers from data spanning 1993 to 2002.

Research in Chile in the 1970s also showed fluoridation caused an increase in infant death rates. Chile stopped fluoridation as a result.

A baby born at least 3 weeks early is classified as premature - accounting for about 12 percent of US births.

To ensure fluoridation was the culprit, and not some other factor, the researchers recorded fluoridation residence status (under or over 1 ppm) and adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, neighborhood poverty level, hypertension and diabetes.

The data came from the NY Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System, which collects comprehensive information on patient characteristics and treatment history. The research was conducted within the university's Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, School of Public Health.

"For the Ministry of Health to continue promoting fluoridation when there is this kind of evidence that it is real health risk is inexcusable" says Mark Atkin, Fluoride Action Network (NZ)'s co-representative on the Fluoridation-free NZ Coalition, adding "Only a few months ago we had further confirmation that fluoridation increases teenage male bone cancer rates. As has been said before, those who continue to promote fluoridation do so at the risk of future legal action against them."

ABC Fails Listeners Again: The View

UPDATE: 30 July - More ABC health propaganda on the way. Add this to the Dr. OZ show and The Doctors to give you more mainstream madness, so look for health status to surely go down. Stay tuned for strong commentary.
ABC expands medical coverage, hires CDC doctor

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE, AP Medical Writer Marilynn Marchione, Ap Medical Writer – 1 hr 14 mins ago
ABC News has hired a top government doctor as part of an expansion of its medical coverage.

Dr. Richard Besser, who was acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when the swine flu epidemic began, will join the network as senior health and medical editor.

ABC also promoted its longtime health commentator Dr. Timothy Johnson to chief medical editor. Johnson is a regular on "Good Morning America," "Nightline" and "20/20."

Besser, a pediatrician, plans to report on obesity, swine flu and other public health issues for multiple programs starting in September.

Yesterday morning I was working out and happened to flip the background noise machine known as TV on to The View.

I really if ever watch daytime TV or much TV for any reason. It is sort of the tool I use to hear the health propaganda spewed out by mainstream media. After all I have to keep my ear to the ground you know.

Oh, Baba Wawa, shame on you and your panel, along with ABC for the junque spewed out by your MD guest, hawking your sponsor's product during their segment.

Proctor & Gamble's Crest toothpaste to allegedly re-mineralize your tooth enamel with stannous (tin) fluoride is a sponsor of The View.

Yesterday (16 July) everyone in the audience went home with a tube of this new Crest toothpaste after hearing the spiel on how you need it to protect tooth enamel.

Fluoride does not protect your teeth or your bones (bisphosphonate drugs like P & Gs Actonel) and it has very serious toxic and poisonous side effects. Read more here...

This segment was an explicit example of how TV is used to promote corporate agendas and health misinformation.
Humans who swallowed large amounts of inorganic tin in research studies suffered stomach aches, anemia, and liver and kidney problems. Studies with inorganic tin in animals have shown similar effects to those observed in humans. There is no evidence that inorganic tin compounds affect reproductive functions, produce birth defects, or cause genetic changes. Inorganic tin compounds are not known to cause cancer.
Inhalation (breathing in), oral (eating or drinking), or dermal exposure (skin contact) to some organotin compounds has been shown to cause harmful effects in humans, but the main effect will depend on the particular organotin compound. There have been reports of skin and eye irritation, respiratory irritation, gastrointestinal effects, and neurological problems in humans exposed for a short period of time to high amounts of certain organotin compounds. Some neurological problems have persisted for years after the poisoning occurred. Lethal cases have been reported following ingestion of very high amounts. Studies in animals have shown that certain organotins mainly affect the immune system, but a different type primarily affects the nervous system. Yet, there are some organotins that exhibit very low toxicity. Exposure of pregnant rats and mice to some organotin compounds has reduced fertility and caused stillbirth, but scientists still are not sure whether this occurs only with doses that are also toxic to the mother. Some animal studies also suggested that reproductive organs of males may be affected. There are no studies of cancer in humans exposed to organotin compounds. Studies of a few organotins in animals suggest that some organotin compounds can produce cancer. On the basis of no data in humans and questionable data from a study in rats, EPA has determined that one specific organotin, tributyltin oxide, is not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity; that is, it is not known whether or not it causes cancer in humans.

ABC Fails Listeners on Health Topics
F is for failure. And this is exactly the grade ABC News and Charles Gibson get for their ridiculous report about yoghurt.

Yoghurt is replete with health promoting bacteria and it has been recognized for hundreds of years for this very reason. If you rely on mainstream media to inform you on this topic you really are left out in the cold.

Of course now that Kraft Foods and General Mills are in the over priced trendy nutrafood market now of course this becomes the focal point for getting air time on the networks or in print or electronic media.

Real yoghurt, the kind I know and have eaten for a bit over half a century isn't in a cute little container containing synthetic ingredients, high fructose corn syrup or aspartame or sucralose. It doesn't even have a marketing campaign to make women believe it support "The Race for the Cure".

The kind of real yoghurt I know and love is the same kind known to give the Hunza and Bulgarians world wide recognition for their health and longevity.

Its also the kind that is scientifically proven to be is rich in potassium, calcium, protein and B vitamins, including B-12. Yoghurt strengthens and stabilizes the immune system.

It also fights the damage caused by antibiotics - I've been teaching this for at least 20 years - and helps prevent secondary infections.

Do your self a favor, look for only high quality and preferably organic whole milk or low fat yoghurt. You might have to look in the health food section of your store or at a health food store. Use fresh fruit, honey, vanilla, cocoa powder or more natural substances to add flavor if you need to.

Don't waste your money on those grocery stores or or highly marketed products because that isn't yoghurt.

And you can donate to our Women's Health Education program instead of buying pink lids. General Mills won't support our work because we don't support their fake foods.
